Recording Software

I currently use Apple Logic Express 9 for my DAW (digital audio workstation) software. It a very sophisticated tool. It has a pretty wide range of recording tools. The synths sound great, so I hope to incorporate them into my songs. It is also highly customizable.

For the Careworn songs and for some of my other songs, I used GarageBand. It is pretty good and it served me well, but the tools and synths were lacking. Also, GarageBand does not take advantage of EZDrummer’s multi-out. That means you can’t equalize your kick drum one way, and apply some compression to your snare a different way, and so on. Finally, you can’t change the tempo in the middle of a song. If you change the tempo, it applies to the entire composition.

For drums, I use Toontrack’s EZDrummer and the Drumkit From Hell (EZD/DFH) add-on for it. It’s a plugin for your DAW using midi. It has samples from Tomas Haake’s (Meshuggah drummer) drum kit. It is easy to edit and composing drum tracks because it supports midi. Additionally, I use the Twisted add-on for some specialty stuff like hand drums and gongs.

For the Careworn recordings, I used Acoustica’s Beatcraft. However, I no longer use it. The sound quality is not as good as EZD/DFH. It just does not sound as natural. Also, it does not support midi, and the interface is very inflexible. It is pretty hard to copy, paste, and move things around.
