Setup And Maintenance

  • This video is about setting up and maintaining your guitar. The purpose is to make your guitar sound great and to make it a lot easier to play.
  • Your fingers and style will affect your sound. Different guitar players sound different, not only because of their guitars, but just their own unique way of playing.
  • The guitar is always less important than the player. Don’t expect to suddenly become a great guitarist if you spend a lot on a great guitar. Along the same lines, you can’t expect to sound or play like a guitarist you admire just because you play his guitar.
  • Comfort and ease of playing should be your primary concern when getting a guitar because otherwise you will not reach your full potential.
  • Treat your guitar well. Keep it well maintained at all times for the best sound. Keep your fretboard and strings clean, because natural oils from your hands will degrade the frets.
  • There are three main things to setting up and maintaining your guitar, and they all affect each other.
    1. Truss Rod
    2. Action
    3. Intonation
  • Always tune up to strings to eliminate slack.
  • Raise your pickups to get a louder sound from the guitar. Just make sure not to raise it too high, otherwise your strings will rattle against the pickups.
