Molten Shrapnel Storm

This song was originally meant to be fast, but as I wrote the riffs for the progressions, the riffs just got slower and heavier.

For this one, we have two guitar solos with some minor third harmonized stuff, and a lot of slap style bass. I am not too good at it, but I thought would fit the slow and heavy style. And the intro is all about sliding harmonized power chords with pinch harmonics on multiple strings.

It’s a pretty straightforward song about a red sky full of glowing hot fragments of metal flying down towards the earth. This is my first attempt at artwork!

Once again, I used GarageBand and EZDrummer/Drumkit From Hell to create this song. You can get the tones I used to create this song here, as long as you use a compatible Pod device.

Here’s a video of me playing the song:

Actually I haven’t mentioned it here. I use Imovie, which is the movie maker for Mac.

Ahh, figures, haha. Do you know of any good video editing software for Windows? Preferably freeware, but I’d take some proprietary suggestions as well :)

Sorry dude I have no idea. I haven’t used a Windows machine in a long time. Fortunately ;)

    Hahaha. Can’t blame you.

This is somewhat off-topic, but if I remember correctly, somewhere you mentioned that you are a software engineer…meaning you obviously use the computer at least as much as you play guitar. How do you avoid over-straining your wrists? I’m only 18 and for about a month now I’ve been developing carpal tunnel symptoms…simply because I use the computer a ton, and because when I’m not using the computer, I’m playing guitar. I’m also going into Computer Science, so it’s imperative that I get it fixed. Any tips?

    Thanks for your time :)

Yes, I have been in software development for a while now. Actually I use my computer far more than I play guitar because it pays a lot more, heheh.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your wrists. I get some minor pain sometimes when I’ve been typing for a long time with no break.

I’m not sure exactly what carpal tunnel is. But I can give you some general ergonomic advice. Your elbows should be relaxed and at your sides, at a 90 degree angle. Meaning, your keyboard shouldn’t be too high or too low. And your wrists should be mostly straight with your forearm. You don’t want to have them bent up or down.

Another thing that can help is totally unrelated to your hands, but make sure that your monitor is at eye level. If you use a laptop on your desk, it might be too low. Place it on some books or something so you don’t have to look down to it. Your back should be straight and have a good posture. Don’t slouch. Even though it’s not related to your wrists, it still helps to have good posture. I hope that helps! Good luck with your programming! If you haven’t already, learn every little tiny detail about pointers, even if you are going to use a language that doesn’t have direct pointer support, like Java or something. :D

Thanks for the tips! My monitor is definitely too low. Right now I’m just trying to take a break from all things that stress my wrists (I’ve been on the computer for maybe 10 minutes total today…as opposed to several hours), but it’s pretty obnoxious not being able to use it, seeing as my future career depends on using my wrists.

I really don’t know much about programming yet, unfortunately…but I have done a few things here and there that got me genuinely interested in it. I’m *always* looking for programming-related advice though, so keep it coming if you have it, haha.

    Thanks again.

Good luck man. You can email me directly if you have any other questions. I could talk about programming stuff all day. :)
